Cast Iron Sewer Drain Pipes
Cast iron has long been the material of choice for sewer pipes. While cast iron sewer drain pipes are strong enough to last from 30 to 50 years, they are also vulnerable to moisture. Like many types of metal, cast iron rusts and corrodes when it is exposed to water. This results in weak, deteriorated pipes that need to be replaced.
When Cast Iron Sewer Drain Pipes Rust
Because cast iron sewer drain pipes are designed to transport wastewater, there’s no avoiding the rust that occurs over time. As rust develops, it interferes with the flow of wastewater in two ways. For one, the rust on the interior of the pipe reduces the diameter the waste flows through. Second, the rust creates a rough surface, reducing the rate at which wastewater can flow across it.
Corrosion is an even bigger problem with cast iron pipes. The constant flow of wastewater creates a channel in the bottom of the pipe. The channel further erodes, creating a weak area in the bottom of the pipe. This allows foreign material to get into the sewer line while also allowing wastewater to escape. Eventually, the corrosion will cause the pipe to completely collapse.

Once wastewater begins to back up, the main priority is to get it flowing again. We offer a rooter service to clear the line long enough to do a video camera inspection. Once the line is clear, we will use a sewer camera to view the entire length of the sewer line. This provides us with the information we need to diagnose the situation. The next step is to create a custom solution that is right for your needs.
Sometimes we use hydrojetting to scour the inside of the line. This is a more effective process than rooter service and it removes grease and tree roots for longer lasting effects. Although this is a more permanent process than our rooter service, abrasive cleaning offers a more permanent solution.
Abrasive cleaning is the use of abrasive honing brushes to remove the interiors corrosion and restore the interior of the pipe to its original diameter.
Pipelining is the installation of a new, stronger lining inside the existing pipe. We install a new, seamless pipeliner that is coated with epoxy. Once the epoxy cures, the lining acts as a new, strong pipe that covers all of the problem areas. Since no digging or excavating is required, it’s a fast, effective process that works on all kinds of pipes including cast iron sewer drain pipes that have rusted or corroded.
