What Is Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting is a drain and sewer line cleaning method that is safe and highly effective. Water is blasted into the line at high pressure (1,500 to 4,000 PSI) from a water storage tank via a hose.
This line cleaning technique is utilized by professional plumbers who employ special jetting nozzles for various types and sizes of drains. Hydro jetting works so well because the high pressure of the spray cuts through debris, scale buildup, and even tree roots to clear the line.
When Is Hydro Jetting Used?
A versatile method of line cleaning, hydro jetting has many applications, especially in urban and commercial situations where there may be large-scale buildups blocking lines. It is also widely used as a preventive method for line maintenance in commercial properties.
Kitchens
Hydro jetting is highly effective in cleaning kitchen lines that can get clogged with grease and other material. For slow drains or if snaking has hit an unmovable blockage, we recommend hydro jetting.
We use a special nozzle specifically for kitchen lines. The hydro jetting process can remove years of buildup caused by oil and grease, or in the case of private residences, failure to collect food debris in the sink when rinsing dishes. You’ll be amazed at how much faster water can flow after hydro jetting.
Main Sewer Lines
Sewer lines can get clogged with tree roots, mineral scale, and bits of broken piping. Hydro jetting can restore the line by removing all of that material.
First, we recommend inspecting the sewer line to ensure the piping is not damaged in any way. If the line is in good condition, hydro jetting can be performed to improve flow.
Area Drains
In the San Diego area, our street drains tend to only get sporadic use during the rainy season in winter. During a storm, they can quickly become clogged with sand, rocks, leaves, twigs, and trash. Then, when the next storm hits, the drain ceases to function properly, causing water ponding, flooding, and damage to pavements and homes.
In addition to preventive measures, we recommend hydro jetting routinely to keep area drains clear during storm season, especially for private properties or communities in flood plains and low-lying areas. A quick camera inspection can determine if the pipe has any blockages and if it’s in good enough shape for high-pressure hydro jetting.
Epoxy Relining
When performing epoxy relining of pipes, you want the interior surface as clean and smooth as possible. Therefore, hydro jetting is often used to thoroughly clean the inside of the pipe prior to relining.
Commercial Maintenance
A sewer or drain backup is a costly emergency you want to avoid if you are a commercial landlord, property manager, or tenant. We advise clients to use hydro jetting as preventive maintenance in order to avoid problems with clogs and slow flow of water and waste. We also frequently recommend hydro jetting for renovators or new commercial property owners to ensure all lines are working at optimum flow.
What Kind of Clients Use Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting can be useful for many types of clients in both commercial and residential settings:
- Commercial kitchens, restaurants, and food preparation facilities
- Manufacturing and other businesses that produce thick waste
- Medical facilities
- Malls and multi-use buildings
- Hotels and motels
- Government buildings and airports
- Corporate campuses
- Municipal maintenance departments
- Storm water and sewer divisions
- City engineering departments
- Renovation architects and contractors
- Commercial landscapers and urban planners
- Small plumbing companies without their own hydro jetting equipment
- Apartment and condominium complexes
- Homeowners and other clients when snaking has failed or would be insufficient
If you fit one of these customer categories and think hydro jetting is what you need, call San Diego Plumbing and Pipelining today at 855-269-7473 or send us an online message to let us know how we can help you. In many instances, hydro jetting may be exactly the solution to your clogged line, slow drainage, or line maintenance problems.
How Is Hydro Jetting Different From Snaking?
Many customers are confused about the differences between hydro jetting and snaking (a.k.a. rooting) and when to use one method over the other. One big difference is that snaking breaks through clogs, while hydro jetting not only clears clogs but restores the entire interior diameter of the pipe. With hydro jetting, scale buildup is eliminated, and you get a much cleaner line that’s almost brand-new.
There are two other instances where hydro jetting is preferred over snaking.
- When you are clearing lines in an outdoor area, such as area drains in public spaces, hydro jetting is easier because the equipment is gas-powered (versus electrical-powered snaking).
- If you are looking for line maintenance solutions, hydro jetting is also better, as it scours the inside of pipes completely.
However, there are cases where snaking should be tried first or may be the best method to use. In many homes, snaking is sufficient and is usually more budget-friendly than hydro jetting for line clogs. Also, if you have older pipes that may not be able to withstand the force of the hydro jetting water pressure, snaking is usually advised until the lines can be repaired or replaced.
We often recommend calling us for snaking first and then using hydro jetting if more powerful cleaning is needed. Understanding when to use which method is one major reason to call a professional plumber like San Diego Plumbing and Pipelining who can advise you on the best techniques for your unique situation.
How Safe Is Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting is generally quite safe for kitchens, sewer lines, and drains, provided the pipes are in good condition. Because hydro jetting uses water under high pressure, a pipe with cracks or holes can break during hydro jetting. At San Diego Plumbing and Pipelining, we use camera inspection if there is any doubt, in order to ensure pipes are in good condition before hydro getting. The integrity of your lines is our utmost priority.
